Power of Paint 2016 ANNUAL SUNSHINE COAST BC ART EXHIBITION

Dear art lovers,

Thank you, on behalf of the Eleven Equal Artists for another outstanding Power of Paint Exhibition on the Sunshine Coast, BC. I am not certain that 6 or so years ago, when we first conceived of Power of Paint that we realized what it was we were doing. Eleven Equal Artists have not only begun an art show, we have brought to life an event.

Through hard work and shared vision we have mounted not only an exhibition of our own diverse styles but an event which included a collaborative art piece, a bursary, live music, food and drink and the attention of the community at large.

Despite the collective hard work of all the artists involved in this show, it would mean nothing if not for you. The success of Power of Paint really lies with the art supporters, the curious, the casual observers and true believers who have attended this event at different times over the last 5 years. For that we thank you.

Special arty thank you to our volunteers, supportive partners and to Ginny Vail for raining in the toddlers.

Eleven Equal Artists :  Morley Baker, Josefa Fritz Barham, Todd Clark, Elizabeth Evans, Greta Guzek, Carol LaFave, Kim LaFave, Ian MacLeod, Cindy Riach, Nadina Tandy and Marleen Vermeulen

From my Sunshine Coast studio

Dear Art Lovers,

I've been gathering my work over the last few months while trying to decide which pieces to exhibit for the upcoming Power of Paint show. I'm drawing from a raw, yet lighter and more vulnerable body of work. Please come say hello at the weekend exhibition details below.

with love, Nadina

Upcoming Exhibition The 5th Annual Power of Paint Exhibition takes place August 12-14, 2016, at the Seaside Centre (5790 Teredo Street, Sechelt, BC) with an opening reception Friday, August 12 at 5pm. The unique quality of Eleven Equal Artists as a group is in their varying styles and deep respect for one another. After 15 years of meeting regularly to share their work, they conspired to exhibit together on the Sunshine Coast in what has become an annual event. This year's collaborative piece is "What Does Power of Paint Mean to You?" With their commitment to giving back to the community the proceeds from this event will help finance Eleven Equal Artists Bursaries. All artists will be in attendance during the show: Morley Baker, Josefa Fritz Barham, Todd Clark, Elizabeth Evans, Greta Guzek, Carol LaFave, Kim LaFave, Ian MacLeod, Cindy Riach, Nadina Tandy and Marleen Vermeulen.                                                                                 photo credit: Rhoni Lloyd Whyard, 2011

Musing from my Sunshine Coast studio.

A  simple yes or no, what to keep and what to burn. Yesterday I took a look at my 'no' pile and thought I liked the shapes of one but not the piece as a whole. I was ripping the paper before my brain had anytime to stop and think, before I knew it I had a yes from a no.

Mark Making Tools ~no horsing around

I live in a community where asking a neighbour for horse hair is as normal as asking to borrow a cup of sugar. The sensory experience of mark making is so deep in our DNA that only when we take the time to revel in the texture and flow of the ink do we realise this love is bigger than ourselves. Or is that just me?

The following video is my first application of ink on paper with my homemade horse hair brush. It moved easily across the paper and I was very happy with the result.

The character and earthy smell of horse hair really comes out once dipped in the ink.

The Process

Field notes: Getting back in the grove. Not sure where I am going and not even going to question it.

Mark making tools, cedar sticks, oil on canvas. Letting my mind wander with no desire to produce a result. Exploring the feeling and discovery lend itself to altered thoughts.

Art Makes Us Happy

AML: How does art make you happy, Nadina? Creating and producing art, or observing it?

Me: Anne Marie that is a good question. I don't know the biochemical reasons but I do know the process of creating does make me feel better, my nervous system doesn't know if the work is good or bad. When I view art and make a connection to it I absolutly feel happy. Art elevates, in the creating and the viewing. When I feel transported I know I am in the right place.

Playing with rust, yes iron. The human nervous system and some Icarus reference. Good art, bad art either way my nervous system does not know the difference. I will sleep well tonight.

Art Makes Us Happy

According to an investigation by French Beaux Arts Magazine (July 2013 Issue)

"art acts like a vitamin on our brain, making us noticeable happier."

Art Matters 4 easy steps to inner peace and getting shit done

Dear Friends and Art lovers,

It is time for me to take my own crabby, bossy, ranting  advice and apply the Art Matters steps. I am not sure how it has come to this, but, I am having an unusually jittery start to creating new work this winter. Last year, at this time, I had rented a larger studio with more space and found it inspiring to not be surrounded by piles of older work nor all the other distractions of working from home. Time seems to shift when you are able to focus. I am trying so hard to focus. So, no more digressing,no more creative procrastination. My studio is organized to within an inch of it's life, pencils are sharpened and the coffee is on. 1..2..3.. GO!

Double Heart ~Archival Print

DOUBLE HEART 2015

Double Heart is 1 of 4 from The Heart Series, encaustic on panel.

Sometimes I will use images that are not my own. Not to claim them as mine more to connect with a collective unconscious. Old anatomy books are a source of inspiration. They are distant, somehow removed from the actual subject they are meant to represent. I recycle stamps from my father's collection and often re-use his written Scientific research reports or just as likely pages torn from an 1800s Tennyson book of poetry given to me by a grade school friend, stolen from her parent's bookshelf . So now you know. Lost and found .

ART AND THE SIX SENSES of CEDAR | Curated Art Exhibition | OCT 16 - 25 2015

This experiential art exhibition featured ‘multi-disciplinary’ visual and sensory perceptions of how a selection of coast-based artists interpret the subject of CEDAR. Influenced by different cultural backgrounds and the senses of sight, sound, touch, taste, smell, and spirit, visual artists, sculptors, fibre-artists, writers and musicians came together to collaborate in an “art as process” journey of self and collective discovery.

FEATURED ARTISTS INCLUDE:

GORDON HALLORANMARLENE LOWDEN, GIORGIO MAGNANENSI, KIRK MICHAEL, VERN BAHTI MINARD, LINDA NARDELLI, DEAN VAN'T SCHIP, KEZ SHERWOOD, JESSICA SILVEY, ROBERT STUDER AND MARLEEN VERMEULEN

Heart Series Encaustic Painting

Sometime I will use images that are not my own. Not to claim them as mine more to connect with a collective unconscious. Old Anatomy books are a source of inspiration. They are distant, somehow removed from the actual subject they are meant to represent. I recycle stamps from my father's collection and often re-use his written Scientific research reports or just as likely pages torn from an 1800s Tennyson book of poetry given to me by a grade school friend, stollen from her parents bookshelf . So now you know. Lost and found .

Encaustic painting, also known as how wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which coloured pigments may or may not be added. I use the hot wax technique to encase the images and preserve them. Prints Available

Most asked question: What drives you to create? Me: to be free

 Question: Why do you create?

Answer : To feel free.

I paint from the inside out, from my memory and with my intuition. I am not striving for correct perspective or painting for pure commerce. I am compelled to create and express. I have to trust and be brave. My drive is to be free, to feel free and share that expression with others.

ART MATTERS | 4 steps to getting shit done.

Disclaimer : all the opinions expressed are my own

Lets blow it up, just do your art and shut the fuck up. I am offering you 4 easy solutions to follow for inner creative peace. You can add to the list in the comments, hell lets coauthor an e-book.

#1 : Create. Create anything. Just start. Don't judge it or think you are amazing. Just pick up a pencil show up to life drawing class. Shut up and draw.

#2 STOP TALKING. Talking about shit, no more conversations about sensitive digestion or your ingrown toe nail that has haunted you and stopped you from being a fully realized super star. Yawn, are you boring yourself?

#3 DON'T LISTEN TO WHAT OTHERS THINK ABOUT YOU OR YOUR ART. Don't listen to what you think about others and their art.

#4 BE IN THE PRESENT. Just 'be' in the  present moment of the creative process and all the other crap will shrink. The perfect weather or the perfect space. You make things happen when you create art with whatever tool you have, wherever you are. It lives in you, don't over think it.

                                         &nb…

Fine Art , not for the faint of heart. My one line elevator pitch.

The cranky artist motivational series has a gift for you! A printable version of ART MATTERS 4 steps to inner creative peace and getting shit done. With love Nadina
